Dr. Betta Chimaobim Edu (born October 27, 1986) is a Nigerian medical doctor, public health expert, public administrator, politician, philanthropist, and humanitarian leader.

She is widely recognized for her work in healthcare delivery, social protection, humanitarian coordination, educational empowerment, and gender-responsive policy implementation, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities across Nigeria and West Africa.

Blending medicine, public health, governance, and humanitarian service, Dr. Edu has impacted thousands of lives through policy reform, large-scale social programs, grassroots outreach, and sustained personal philanthropy.

Early Life & Education

Born in Lagos and raised across Lagos, London, and Calabar, Dr. Edu’s early exposure to diverse cultures and her father’s missionary work shaped her commitment to service.

She earned her MBBS from the University of Calabar (2009), followed by a Master’s in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and a DrPH from Texila American University, with executive training at Harvard.

Public Health, Governance & Policy

Her career began as Chief Medical Director at NYSC Camp Hospital in 2012. At 29, she became the youngest Special Adviser on Community & Primary Healthcare in Cross River State.

As pioneer Director‑General of the Primary Healthcare Agency (2016–2019), she revitalized hundreds of health centres. As Commissioner for Health (2019–2022), she chaired the COVID‑19 Taskforce and expanded Universal Health Coverage.

She was elected National Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum and served on the National Health Reform Committee.

National Political Leadership

In March 2022, she became the youngest National Women Leader of the APC – a historic first for any party in Africa. She championed the 35% affirmative action and mobilized millions of women for political participation.

Federal Cabinet & Humanitarian Service

Sworn in as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs in July 2023 – the youngest minister in the Fourth Republic. She also chairs the ECOWAS Inter‑Ministerial Committee on Social Protection.
